An
Introduction to the Sociology of Health & Illness - by Dr Kevin White
Review
'Kevin White guides us through the many reasons for the centrality of health showing
clearly that health and illness are the products not just of our biology but of the
society into which we are born. He expertly draws on the works of Parsons, Marx, Foucault
and feminist writers to provide an authoritative analysis of the social nature of health'
- Ray Fitzpatrick, University of Oxford
'The overall arguments being made are thoroughly sociological, and the chapters provide
great overviews and insights that even those in the field will find useful. The chapters
in the text are very stimulating, and White calls on a variety of perspectives to flesh
out the arguments he makes. I would certainly recommend the text for introductory courses.
The invigorating style should be attractive to students' - eSocHealth

Review
What distinguishes the text is up to date and comprehensive coverage. It really
covers all the points you wish to address in an undergraduate medical sociology
class.
-William Haas, University of North Carolina at Asheville
The book is effective in demonstrating the richness of the field of medical
sociology in addressing important social and organizational issues in health care.
The chapters are very well-organized, typically beginning with the basic
descriptions of the issues and of fundamental concepts before moving to more detailed
descriptions.
-Eldon Wegner, University of Hawaii at Manoa
The textbook is impressive with its solid theoretical grounding in sociological
theory generally and medical sociology in particular. This is a high quality
accomplishment. The authors succeed in providing a broad overview of seminal
and current sociological research within medical sociology.
-Diane Shinberg, University of Memphis

Globalization
And Health (International Studies in Sociology and Social Anthropology) -
Book by Richard L. Harris, MELINDA SEID
International contributors to a dozen essays treat these public health issues via
theoretical and pragmatic frameworks. A World Health Organization-sponsored paper
concludes that, for developing countries, comparative case studies may be more useful than
traditional health measures due to unreliable data.
