Sociologyindex, Sociology Books 2012, Socialization

Political Socialization is the component of the process of individuals coming to learn and internalize the culture of their society or group that is directly related to the transmission of political values and behaviours.

NOT YOUR PARENTS' POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION: Introduction for a New Generation, Virginia Sapiro, Department of Political Science and Women's Studies Program, University of Wisconsin - email: vsapiro@wisc.edu - Annual Review of Political Science
Abstract The field of political socialization is often stereotyped in terms of some of the earliest work in the field and is neglected outside certain areas of American political behavior. However, the continuing and vibrant stream of work in political socialization holds potential for addressing many critical issues across American, comparative, and international politics. This article discusses three themes: the construction of a more genuinely comparative field of political socialization, a reconsideration of the relevance of childhood to politics following its virtual abandonment by the field for many years, and the importance of understanding the origins of preferences.

Student Activism and Political Socialization: A Causal Model of Socialization Stages and Adult Left-wing Politics in the United States and Japan. Fendrich, James M.; Krauss, Ellis S.
The relative influence of stages of political socialization on the adult political orientation and activities of former American and Japanese student activists is examined. A causal model of the stages of political socialization, including family and school, student activism, and adult roles, is compared with the political fate of student activists who participated in the 1960 antisecurity treaty movement in Japan and the civil rights movement in the American South. The results indicate that student activism in college is the best predictor of adult politics in both countries. Family and early school political socialization are only weak predictors of future adult politics. Adult political socialization can be either a facilitator or a constraint for maintaining political commitments. In the United States, career choice has no direct effect because student activism strongly affects career choice. In Japan, career choice has a strong effect on adult politics. Former Japanese students in the knowledge and human services industries have greater left-wing commitments. For American student activists, remaining free of family affiliations is a facilitator for left-wing politics; while in Japan, family obligations are a facilitator of left-wing politics.

Political Socialization in Contemporary Japan - Jun-Ichi Kawata, Faculty of Law, Konan University, International Political Science Review, Vol. 8, No. 3, 245-259 (1987)
This paper reviews some interesting findings on political socialization in contemporary Japan, a field characterized by a fair amount of research but a paucity of empirical studies related to specific theories or propositions. The aspects of political socialization selected for discussion are the formation and development of party support, ideology, and attachment to the political system.

Considering Political Socialization Among African American Youth - Ahmed, Zahra
Paper presented at the annual meeting of the The Midwest Political Science Association.
Abstract: Political socialization is a foundational aspect of political consciousness development because it is the process by which outside influences transmit political information and expectations to an individual. As such, political socialization exerts a strong and early influence on young people in a variety of ways. Ideally, this early influence contributes to the young person’s political consciousness development and their realization of themselves as political actors. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to conduct a critical review of existing political socialization literature with an eye for works that contribute to our understanding of political socialization processes among minority youth. In light of the need to recognize the disparate experiences of minorities from ‘mainstream’ America, this paper offers a critical review of political socialization research as a step toward recognizing its contributions and shortcomings.

"Europeanizing" Civil Society: NGOs as agents of political socialization, Warleigh, Alex
Journal of Common Market Studies
Abstract: As a strategy for tackling the `democratic deficit', attention is increasingly shifting towards the `Europeanization' of civil society, the latter being traditionally viewed as a means both to limit state power and to promote intra-citizenry solidarity. However, this attempted change requires in turn actors who are both able and willing to act as agents of political socialization in the context of EU policy-making. This article examines the emphasis placed by both EU actors and the current academic literature on NGOs as such agents. Drawing on an analysis of similar claims made in development policy, I isolate the main indicators of NGOs' ability to foster the Europeanization of civil society via political socialization and put forward seven key tests of their ability to carry out this function in the EU context. These are then evaluated against the results of original empirical investigations. I argue that NGOs are currently unsuited to the task of Europeanizing civil society thanks to their inability to promote the political socialization of their supporters. As a consequence that task requires EU-level institutional reform informed by iterated public dialogue, as well as change in the working practices of NGOs.

The Functions of Mass Media in the Political Socialization of Adolescents - Hanna Adoni, Hebrew University of Jerusalem,  Communication Research, Vol. 6, No. 1, 84-106 (1979)
This study suggests that the mass media serve as socializing agents by providing direct linkage to media and contents which are essential for the development of political values, and by contributing to the structuring of social contexts in which adolescents may exercise such value orientations and reinforce ties with primary socializing agents.

Political Socialization, Media Perception and Information Processing . Dobreva, Alina
Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Society of Political Psychology.
Abstract: One of the factors influencing strongly the character of the media perception is considered to be the type of political socialization. But this claim is hard to be proven. Political socialization takes place in certain socio-cultural setting and comparing cases with different socio-cultural settings introduces number of confounding variables. The post-communist countries present unique chance of comparing people who are politically socialized under radically different political systems and yet belonging to the same state, same society and same cultural background. The rapid political changes in the post-communist countries present us with cohabitation of generations that are simultaneously product of the same culture and of radically different political systems. The older generation was socialized under totalitarianism and the younger generation has experienced only freedom. Those circumstances of political socialization lead to different attitudes towards politics as a whole, political information and media in particular, as well as political discussions. The paper proposed for this panel is focused on the influence of political socialization over media perception and information processing. The research is based on focus groups of different age groups. Some of the major features of the different techniques of information processing of each age group include willingness and need for acquiring new information, emotional price of internalizing new information, perception of personal relevance of politics as such and character of interaction between old and new information. The analysis of the discussions reflects also the functions and roles of political information and political discussions.
