Studying social sciences normally takes 4 years at the K.U.Leuven. In the first year all students of communication, politics and sociology study the same programme to obtain a basic knowledge of society from different perspectives. The second year contains a common core as well as an introduction according to the field of specialisation (sociology, politics or communication studies).
The licentiate programme assures the integration of research, theory and policy, on top of the sociology-specialisation in the second candidature. Firstly, a group of subjects is compulsory for all students: ‘sociological theories of social processes’, ‘sociological research: multivariate analysis’ and finally ‘ethics and society’. Besides the joint programme, the student has to choose 1 methodological course out of 3 and 1 theoretical course out of 3. Students must choose one field of specialisation: ‘sociology of family, population and health care’, ‘social policy’ or ‘sociology of work and industrial relations’ or 'sociology of culture and education. Finally, students can choose a number of optional subjects.

IMPALLA‘s advanced academic programme has three major objectives:
