Kate Purcell
kate.purcell@warwick.ac.uk
Professor Kate Purcell is a sociologist, based at the Warwick University Institute for
Employment Research. Previous research has focused on gender at work, employment
flexibility and the interface between labour market supply and demand, but increasingly,
she has been focusing on the relationship between education, skills development,
employment and socio-economic change. Between 1999-2005, she worked on two related British
Council/CNPq-funded academic link projects with Brazilian colleagues developing
methodologies and comparative approaches to the analysis of labour market and occupational
change in the context of economic restructuring, and continues to work and publish with
them. In UK, she has directed a series of national investigations of graduate employment
and transitions from higher education to employment, funded by the UK government, the
European Commission European Social Fund, the Economic and Social Research Council and the
Higher Education Careers Services Unit and she is currently directing a major longitudinal
study of 2006 full-time undergraduate applicants that will monitor respondents until
2011/12. Her main research interests are occupational and organisational change, the
impact of higher education expansion and equal opportunities legislation on employment,
and the development of mixed-methods interdisciplinary research to investigate
policy-related issues. See www.warwick.ac.uk/go/glmf for details current and recent
research.
