Section AGING AND SOCIETY
There is an increasing number of social scientist working on topics of old age and aging.
By now, sociology of aging is not very well instituionalized or represented neither in
German sociology nor gerontology, though. There have been discussions among sociologists
who are studying aging, social policy, and the life course on this situation with the
result that there was a first open meeting held on the congress of sociology in 1996 in
Dresden. The response was overwhelming but it took another two years up to 1998 when we
achieved the status of an official working group by the German Sociological Association
(DGS) during the German - Austrian - Swiss congress of sociology in Freiburg, Germany.
