Department of Sociology at the University of Crete, Greece
Jean Monnet Chair
http://www.soc.uoc.gr/calendar/jeanmon/ChairHolder.htm
Chair Holder
a) C.V.: Andreas MOSCHONAS (B.A. Concordia University, M.A.& Ph.D Queen's University,
Canada) is currently Associate Professor of Political Sociology in the Department of
Sociology at the University of Crete, Greece, and Jean Monnet Professor of European
Integration. He holds the Jean Monnet Chair in Political Sociology of European
Integration. He has published a number of articles and books on Greece and the EU.,
including: The Impact of European Integration: Political, Sociological, and Economic
Changes(author & co-editor, Praeger,1996), European Integration and Prospects of
Modernization in Greece (Journal of Modern Greek Studies,1997), and Education and
Training in the European Union, (Ashgate,1998). He does research on political parties,
euroelections, and trade unions and european integration.
b) Jean Monnet Courses:
i) Course 1: Political Sociology of European Integration (????-242)
This is a core course in the three-course programme of the Chair, introducing the students
to the political sociology of european integration, i.e. to the analysis of the relations
of power which historically appear at the supra-national level. Based on the idea that the
political institutions of the EU not only express but also affect social processes, the
course examines the logic of the establishment of the EU from both a historical and
theoretical perspective, the institutions of the EU, the articulation and representation
of social interests at the european level, and the content and the form of the basic
policies of the Union.
ii) Course 2: Comparative Political Sociology: The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership
(S?G?-200)
This course takes up the international dimension of european integration and concentrates
on the very topical issue of the Euro-Mediterranean Parthership. Adjusting to the
requirements of the academic field of a Sociology Department, the course mostly employs
the methodological tools of comparative political sociology. Specifically, the course
systematically explores the historical specificity of the Mediterranean countries (both of
Southern Europe and of North Africa and the Middle East) in the context of their
relationship with the process of european integration. Thus, the course analyzes
historically the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (in all of its three dimensions:
economic/financial matters, political/security matters, social/cultural/humanitarean
matters) by focusing on such key social and political questions as: the social/class
structure of these countries, the social and political expression of civil society (eg.
trade unions/professional organizations/political parties), the role of ideology and of
political culture, with particular though not exclusive reference to the role of Islam,
and the specific function of democracy and the state.
iii) Course 3: Special Issues of European Integration (????-347)
This is a seminar-course and has as a prerequisite the core course in the three-course
programme of the Chair (course1, above). Although its content may change from time to
time, the seminar concentrates on the social dimension of european integration in an
effort to bring to the fore the constituent parts of the so-called Social Europe. Thus,
the seminar discusses such key concepts and themes as: the logic of the social dimension
of the EU, the means for social policy action (eg. Structural Funds, Community Support
Frameworks), the issue of economic conversion, social and economic cohesion, the dynamics
of employment and immigration in the EU, european education policy, individual and social
rights, the issue of european citizenship, and the role of the forces of the Left in the
process of european integration and in the enhancement of Social Europe.
