INSTITUTE OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL POLICY
Sociological education and research have had a traditional place at the Corvinus
University of Budapest. In the late 1960s (economic)sociology was introduced as an
independent subject in the form of a research team with the participation of András
Hegedus, Ferenc Nemes and Iván Szelényi. In the 1970s sociology or certain special
fields of sociology gradually became part of the economics course. Sociology Department
was established at the end of the 1980s under the leadership first of Ferenc Gazsó, and
then of Rudolf Andorka, who later became the rector of the university. At that time
sociology could be studied both as a main subject and as a subsidiary course. László
Bertalan and László Csontos played a prominent role in the development of the department
profile. In the late 1980s the university and the structure of its faculties were
reformed, and the Faculty of Social Sciences was set up. The new faculty accommodated the
Department of Sociology and Social Policy which has played a vital part in the teaching
profile of the faculty. Students were able to specialize in Sociology and Economics or
Social Policy and Economics. Our colleagues were involved in more and more Hungarian and
international research programmes, especially in the fields of social structure, economic
sociology and social policy.
From the 90s to 2004 the head of the department was György Lengyel. It was during this
period that the Ph.D. programme was established, first in partnership with the Institute
of Sociology of Eötvös Loránd University, and later as an independent Ph.D School of
Sociology under the leadership of György Lengyel. In 2001 the five-year university degree
programme in Sociology was successfully accredited, and the first degree in sociology was
issued in 2006. Since 2002 students have been able to take a joint degree in Communication
and Sociology. According to the higher education ranking, published in the newspaper
Népszabadság, our institute provides the most popular educational programme in sociology
(followed by the Departments of Sociology at Eötvös Loránd University and the
University of Pécs).
