Association, and
* Practice public sociology by actively engaging with constituencies beyond the academy.
The specialist research and publication areas of these academic staff members are
* Social identity, Socialisation, Race and Citizenship,
* Sociology of work and Labour studies,
* Organisations and Whistleblowing,
* Gender, Family, Sexuality and HIV / Aids,
* South African Sociology and Higher education,
* Military sociology and Socioloy of war and peace,
* Social capital and Group dynamics,
* Urban sociology and Informality,
* Development and Nutrition,
* Research methodology,
* Political sociology,
* and various of these in combination.
Since the coherent UJ Sociology coursework programme responds to the range of research and

interests of staff members of the Department of Sociology. The department's programme
encourages critical thinking and an analytical approach to social and organisational
problems - skills that are highly sought after in the labour market.

Sociologists are curious about the social world. They are concerned with disaggregating
society and the complexities of social life systematically and many of us are concerned to
make the world a better place in this endeavour. Overall sociological analysts depart from
the view that context is the key to the understanding and exploration of individual
behaviour. We invite you to join us in our striving to explore and understand our worlds
and in so doing our own lives.
The sociologists in thisDepartment are actively involved in teaching and research related
to a variety of topics that include gender, family, poverty, development, societal change,
human rights, conflict resolution, race and health.

Department of Sociology
The Sociology department at Unisa dates back to 1946. From its inception in 1873 until
1946, the University of South Africa was an examinations body, and did not engage in
teaching of its own. This changed in 1946, when it was decided that the University would
henceforth engage in distance education as well. Soon after that the first Sociology
lecturer was appointed. He was Jacobus A. Van der Walt. Mr. Van der Walt joined 9 other
lecturers.

Anthropology and Sociology are established social science disciplines. Both are immensely
challenging and exciting and generally aim to understand culture and how societies work.
They investigate the cultures and structures of different societies throughout the world
and throughout history analyzing their various patterns such as cultural patterns,
kinship, marriage, economy, social class, gender and race.
They observe the everyday experiences of people in groups and collectivities - ethnic,
professionals, workers, gangs, families and seek to explain them. They also raise critical
philosophical issues about how a society can be studied. A course in
Anthropology/Sociology thus equips one to think systematically, critically and in a
disciplined and informed fashion. The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at UWC has
this as its chief aim and both the under-graduate and post-graduate courses have been
designed accordingly.
Anthropology & Sociology provide a sound basis for careers in education, social
research, community development, public administration, conflict resolution, heritage
management, social services, and a range of other fields where a knowledge of how society
works is an important factor.

Department of Sociology
Sociology at Wits
Sociology is the study of society in all its complexity, from both an empirical and a
theoretical perspective. The Department of Sociology at Wits has an outstanding staff with
an extremely wide range of teaching and research interests, and a deep commitment to
teaching and to involving students in its work.
The Department of Sociology has a rich series of offerings for 2008 both for students
majoring in the subject and for those who wish to gain some idea of its scope, or to
explore a particular area.
For students intending to major, we have a programme which contains both prescribed
modules and options; we are also able to offer the opportunity to take modules in addition
to those prescribed. Students eligible for second and/or third level courses may take more
than the minimum Sociology modules at any particular time.
Sociology and Industrial Sociology prepare students for careers in a variety of areas.
These include:
Policy and Planning in the public and private sectors
Development and Aid work particularly in the NGO community
Survey and other forms of social research
Industrial Relations and Human Resources
Academic Teaching and Research
Journalism and many others.
Social Research in Health and HIV/AIDS
For students interested in single modules, we offer topics in such diverse areas as the
Sociology of Law, of Health, of Work, of Peace, of Crime, of Culture, HIV/AIDS in Context
and others. Many of these may offer students majoring in other subjects a particular
insight into their chosen field.
